OBU Mounts Massive Comeback at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Down by as many as 15 points in the fourth, Oklahoma Baptist rallied for a 77-73 win at Midwestern State on Tuesday. The win evened the Bison's record at 2-2.

Erika Ankney scored a game-high 27 points including the go-ahead free throws while Madison Chambers and Jaedyn Getman tallied 13 and 12, respectively. As a team, the Bison were sensational at the foul line hitting 30-of-35 (85.7%).

The opening quarter was quite the rollercoaster ride for the Bison. They missed their first nine shots, trailed 11-1, but by the end, held a 20-17 advantage.

At the 5:26 mark, Midwestern's Sheridan Bostic hit a three-pointer to make the score 11-1. After that, it was all green and gold. OBU hit 11 free throws in the final five minutes of the quarter and got a few made shots from Jaedyn Getman, Sierra Copeland and Malou Savanna. Plus, an end-of-period and-one by Erika Ankney made the score 20-17.

OBU hit 11-of-14 at the foul line in the first and down the stretch held the Mustangs to 1-of-5 shooting.

In the second, the Bison maintained their lead and boosted it to as many as nine, 28-19, after a jumper by freshman Sydney Duncan at 3:43.  At the end, though, MSU scored six straight to take a 35-34 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs scored four free throws and a tip-in layup in the final five seconds to take a one-point lead.

After the break, offense was really at a premium. At one point, the Bison were shooting 18 percent and by the end of the quarter, they had hit three of 17 attempts (17.6%).  That allowed Midwestern State to go up 51-43 heading into the final quarter.

OBU's fourth quarter rally started with about six minutes left. Trailing 62-47, OBU hit a 23-8 run and tied the game at 70. Ankney had eight points, Chambers added five and Kayla Highfill chipped in with four. The Mustangs turned the ball over four times and shot 2-of-7 during that massive stretch for OBU.

Then in the final minute, an Ankney steal followed by two free throws with 54 seconds left put the Bison ahead for good. Ankney ended up scoring six of the team's final seven points of the game.

Next on the schedule for OBU is a home game Nov. 26 against Cameron at 1:30 p.m.
