TOPEKA, Kan. – While offense was at a premium on Saturday, Oklahoma Baptist did what it needed to defeat Washburn 43-41 to close out the Washburn Crossover Classic at Lee Arena.
Jaedyn Getman scored a game-high 13 points while senior
Melissa Southard recorded a career-high 12 to lift the green and gold. Plus, the Bison defense wound up collecting 25 Ichabod turnovers and held the hosts to 30.4 percent shooting from the field and from three.
First-quarter competition didn't produce much as there were just 13 combined points, eight of which were scored by Washburn. The two teams combined to hit just six of 22 attempts.
In the second, Washburn and OBU traded points throughout. OBU's last lead, 17-16, came on a
Madison Chambers fast-break layup with 1:07 left but by half, the Ichabods led 20-19 after a three-ball by Gabi Artis.
Not much changed in the third but an and-one conversion by
Kayla Highfill with eight seconds left gave the Bison momentum. Heading to the fourth, it was 31-28 OBU.
About halfway through the final period, the Bison made their game-clinching run. With the scoreboard knotted up at 35, the green and gold scored seven straight. Those points came from Chambers, Highfill and Getman.
With a 42-35 lead, the Bison would never relinquish their opportunity to win. In fact, they held Washburn to two-of-10 shooting down the stretch.
Next on the schedule for the Bison is another road game next Saturday, Nov. 19, at Northeastern State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
