Bison Soccer: Week 1 Preview

SHAWNEE – Two tough matches are on the docket for the Oklahoma Baptist Bison soccer team this week as they open their season. OBU, ranked No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, will host Central Missouri on September 2 at 6 p.m. before traveling to No. 7 Dallas Baptist on September 4.

Here's a look at both opponents:

Central Missouri | Mid-America Intercollegiate | Spring 2021 Record: 8-4

The Jennies are under the direction of Lewis Theobald, who is in his 15th season. During the 2017 campaign, he led UCM to a 26-0 record and a Division II national title, the program's first. Just a few months ago in the spring, the Jennies topped the Southeast division of the MIAA with a 4-2 record (8-4 overall), but opted out of the conference tournament. The MIAA Preseason Poll placed the Jennies in third place, receiving one first-place vote. This will be the first time in history that the Bison face the Jennies in women's soccer.

Key Returners:
No. 20 Caroline Cole | MIAA First Team with two goals, two assists and six points
No. 8 Kassie Newsom | MIAA Second Team with two assists and seven shots on goal
No. 1 Hannah Groh | Earned two shutouts and recorded eight saves

Dallas Baptist | Lone Star Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 12-1-1

After being picked as LSC Coach of the Year, Michelle Lenard returns to coach the Patriots in the 2021 fall season. The Patriots were picked first in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll with 18 of 32 possible first-place votes. In the spring, their season ended in the conference championship when they lost to Angelo State after completing a 5-0-1 conference season.

Key Returners:
No. 18 Ashley Merrill | LSC Player & Midfielder of the Year with 39 points and 17 goals
No. 10 Blythe Obar | LSC Defensive Player of the Year
No. 8 Delaney Schmidt | LSC All-Conference Team with 21 points (8g, 5a)
