SHAWNEE – For the second straight day, the Oklahoma Baptist softball team erased a three-run deficit and came from behind for a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State, as a walk-off two-run home run from
Asia Henry landed the Bison a 6-5 victory in the teams' series finale.
Just like game one, OBU found themselves in a 3-0 hole as SWOSU took advantage of two Bison errors to gain the lead. OBU had to chip away and work from behind while
Kaley Sessums settled in and began to slow down the Bulldog bats in the circle.
OBU got runners on, but couldn't bring anyone around, still trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. With one down,
Jocee Sparks and Henry each drew walks before Cheyanne Demaree ripped a single through the right side to scored
Reagan Ford and cut the deficit to two.
With two outs in the same inning and two runners still on,
Shelby Savage smashed a two-run triple down the right field line and proceeded to come home on a throwing error to third to give OBU a 4-3 lead and all the momentum
However, SWOSU got one back with a solo blast in the sixth, eventually sending the game to extra innings. The Bulldogs struck again in the top of the eighth with another solo shot to retake the lead at 5-4.
With one down in the bottom half, Sparks led the inning off with a single down the right field line, advancing to second on a fielding error. That set up Henry, who drove a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall to give the Bison the walk-off winner and the series sweep.
Henry was 2-for-3 with the walk-off and two RBIs, while Demaree was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Savage added the huge RBI triple, while Sparks and
Sheyanne Sandoval each had a hit.
Sessums went 7.1 innings and only allowed three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Kayleigh Jones (W, 5-2) entered in relief and earned the win in 0.2 IP, including two strikeouts.
The Bison move to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the GAC. They will continue conference play on Tuesday as they welcome rival Southern Nazarene for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
