SHAWNEE - The eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist volleyball team swept through the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs on Friday evening inside the Noble Complex.
Efficient hitting was they key on this night as OBU had 48 kills to 21 errors for an impressive .214 hitting percentage as a team. The Bison also kept SWOSU in check with 30 kills to 20 errors and an .083 hitting percentage.
The Bison finished with nine blocks on the night and held a 45-26 advantage in assists and a 63-55 edge in digs.
OBU dominated the first set, hitting .156 Â to go with 16 kills while holding SWOSU to only nine kills. The Bison used a bunch of three or four point rallies to eventually build a lead out to eight, taking the set 25-18.
The Bison hitting trend continued to the second set as they hit an impressive .265 with kills at a high at 19. It was the Bulldogs best set hitting wise, going for 13 kills and a .178 percentage
OBU was the aggressor early on, building a 12-4 lead behind kills from
Malia Leatherland and
Taryn Weber. The Bison maintained that lead for most of the set as their attack remained red hot.
SWOSU cut it all the way down to four late in the set, but it was too little, too late as the Bison closed the set for a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 lead.
OBU finished off the Bulldogs with stringent defense in the final set, holding SWOSU to nine kills and eight errors for a .028 hitting percentage while adding 13 kills of their own and a .219 hitting percentage.
SWOSU hung around this time as OBU did not get off to the fast start they did in the first two sets, but the Bison maintained a 12-10 lead. OBU then rattled off four straight points behind kills from Leatherland and
Taneyah Brown and blocks by Brown, Leatherland, and
Julia Brinton.
OBU pushed that lead to 20-14 and cruised to a 25-17 victory and sweep.
Leatherland led OBU with 17 kills on a massive .351 hitting percentage while
Taryn Weber added 11 kills.
Taneyah Brown picked up eight kills while
Kaylee Buell finished with 39 assists.
Defensively,
Diana Carranza led the way with 19 digs while Brown added 13 digs to go with five block assists. Brinton also had a huge block day, going for seven block assists while Buell added two.
Chezney Nielson led SWOSU with eight kills while Allie Hoang added 22 assists. Sophia Desantiago had 18 digs as well as four block assists and a solo block.
The Bison are now 11-0 and 6-0 in the GAC. They will turn around and take on the tough Bulldogs again on Tuesday night as they are set to meet at 7 p.m. in Weatherford.
