WICHITA, Kan. – The 19th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist volleyball team picked up a pair of key victories over MIAA opponents, earning sweeps over Newman and No. 20 Washburn on Friday afternoon.
In the first contest, the Bison rolled through the Jets, taking a 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 victory on Newman's home floor.
Later in the day the Bison had their first nationally-ranked match of the season against No. 20 Washburn, a team that was No. 4. in the preseason polls in early January and a Central Regional participant a season ago.
OBU battled to a 25-21 first set victory and then pulled away to 25-18 wins in sets two and three to knock off the Ichabods. Though stats were not kept due to MIAA rules,
Malia Leatherland was dominant with 15 kills while hitting .433. in the match. As a team, OBU had 13 blocks, including seven from
Audrey Poupard and five from
Taryn Weber.
The Bison will continue their run of stiff competition as they take on preseason No. 1 and current No. 11 Nebraska-Kearney at 9 a.m. before facing Missouri Western later in the afternoon.
