EDMOND, Okla. –Â
Kayleigh Jones put together her second straight masterful performance as she led the Oklahoma Baptist softball team to a win over Fort Hays State in the early contest of the day of the OC/UCO Softball Invitational. The Bison would fall later on in the afternoon to Cameron to earn a split in Monday's action.
Jones was excellent in the circle, commanding the zone and pitching a complete game shutout, allowing no runs on two hits to go with seven strikeouts and only one walk.
The Bison did all of their damage in the third inning as
Kylie Kawamura drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice bunt and another run would cross on a fielding error to make it a 2-0 game.
Kaytlyn Marsh added a sac fly to push the lead to 3-0 followed by a frozen rope up the middle from
Jocee Sparks to drive another run in and make it a 4-0 contest.
It was all Jones needed as she cruised the rest of the way to earn the win, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters including the last five batters.
Seven different batters got a hit for the Bison as Kawamura finished with 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Sparks was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Marsh drove in a run while
Asia Henry,
McKenna Anderson, and
Shelby Savage all added runs scored.
The Bison were in a 2-0 hole against the Aggies, taking advantage of an OBU miscue and scoring two unearned runs.
The score would remain that way behind the strong performance from
Aspen Younce until the fifth inning when Kawamura reached on a Cameron error, scoring
Sheyanne Sandoval and cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.
However, the Aggies broke the game open in the sixth, adding two more runs to lead 4-1. OBU got the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but could not even the game, dropping their first game of the season.
Younce pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two.
Shianne Eddings added 0.1 innings of work in relief.
Six different Bison had a hit on the afternoon, but eight runners were left on base. Kawamura, Marsh,
Emily Smith,
Mia Moddelmog, and
Emily Richardson were all 1-for-3 on the day. Smith scored the lone run.
The Bison go to 3-1 on the season and return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Newman at 12 p.m. on the campus of Oklahoma Christian.
