OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Led by
Mallory Lockhart's 20 points, the Oklahoma Baptist women's basketball team closed non-conference play with an 85-58 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday night.
OBU hit 15 three-pointers marking only the second time in the Division II era that the team hit that many. The previous occasion came against East Central on Feb. 13, 2016. In addition to that, the green and gold attained their fifth win (5-3) of the season, surpassing its spring total.
Lockhart was 6-of-10 from deep while
Jaylin Stapleton added a 4-of-8 mark from three for 12 points. Stapleton also added a game-high five assists.
Rounding out OBU's top scorers were newcomers
Jill Leslie and
Kendall Parker and senior
Andreja Peciuraite. Leslie scored a season-high 12 to go along with a game-high eight rebounds while Parker scored nine on a trio of three-pointers. For Peciuraite, she contributed 14 points and six boards.
As a team, the Bison hit 55.6 percent from downtown. OBU's defense also did its part, holding OC to 31.3 percent shooting.
The first quarter set the tone for the entire game as OBU hit four long balls. Within the first 4:18 of competition, the visitors attained a 12-3 advantage which included threes from Stapleton and Lockhart. By the end of the period, a Leslie offensive rebound and put-back layup had OBU up 22-10.
In the second, the Bison exploded and hit 80 percent. OBU never let its double-digit lead get to single digits and went up as many as 19 points on shots from
Payton Taylor and Peciuraite. The squad was also perfect on four 3-point attempts as Parker, Stapleton, Lockhart and
Madison Chambers all hit threes.
Heading to the third with the scoreboard at 44-25, the closest the Lady Eagles got was 13 points, 49-36, after a Kate Bradley layup at 4:34. By quarter's end, another Lockhart three, her sixth of the night, had the Bison up 63-44.
In the final stanza, Leslie tallied eight points while fellow freshman
Chloe Poole hit her first career three-pointer at 2:20 to make the score 81-53.
OBU will return to conference play on Dec. 11 when it hosts Southeastern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. inside Noble Complex.
