SHAWNEE – Coming off a 74-60 win against Northeastern State, the Oklahoma Baptist women's hoops team will look to keep progressing with two games on the docket this week. On Nov. 23, the team hosts Midwestern State at 7 p.m. and then on Saturday, Nov. 27, will face off against Cameron University in Lawton.
The Bison's win over Northeastern saw seniors
Kalifa Ford and
Andreja Peciuraite each record double-doubles. The duo combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds as the team pulled away in the fourth quarter to notch their first win of the season.
OBU's free throw performance in the game was important, too, as it hit 15-of-19 (78.9).
So far this season, three players are averaging double-digit scoring totals. Peciuraite tallied 19 against Northeastern, her first game of the season, while Ford and
Mallory Lockhart have each averaged at least 12. Ford has also averaged 9.0 rebounds per game.
Additionally,
Jaylin Stapleton has averaged 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists in the three contests. Collectively, OBU could stand to improve its field-goal percentage mark as it has hit 35.9 percent this year. On the defensive end, the Bison have done a pretty good job, especially from three-point range. Opponents are hitting under 30 percent.
Here's a look at this week's opponents:
Midwestern State |
Lone Star Conference |
2020-21 Record: 11-7
The Mustangs were picked to finish fifth in the LSC Preseason Poll. Midwestern is off to a 2-1 start which includes wins over UC Colorado Springs and Adams State. Most recently, MSU lost to Cameron on Nov. 16.
Four players score in double figures for the Mustangs led by Frances King's 14.7. Morgan Lenahan and Hannah Reynolds each average at least 12.0 per game and pull down nearly seven boards per contest.
Midwestern has been really good from inside the three-point line, hitting 53.4 percent. From range, though, it is just 9-of-35 for a 25.7 percent clip. One stat that's alarming is turnovers. Through three games, the Mustangs have turned it over 85 times, a 28.3-per game average.
Cameron |
Lone Star Conference |
2020-21 Record: 11-8
The Aggies are 4-1 to start the year. Their lone loss was to fourth-ranked Fort Hays State by an 85-79 margin on Nov. 20. In the Lone Star Conference's Preseason Poll, Cameron was slotted in fourth.
Leading the team is guard Maighan Hedge. In her career, she's been a First Team All-LSC selection, an All-Region selection and the Lone Star's Freshman of the Year among other accolades. So far this winter, she has averaged nearly 24 points per game. Stephanie Peterson is another threat, scoring 14.6 per game while pulling down a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.
As a unit, the Aggies' offense is very productive, hitting above 40 percent from three and from the field. They also are hitting 77.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Defensively, Cameron is more than solid. It is giving up 38.3 percent from the field and a miserable 17.4 percent to opponents from three. Furthermore, the team is collecting nearly 13 steals per game.
