Bison Soccer: Week 6 Preview

SHAWNEE – Two mid-week contests are on tap for the Oklahoma Baptist soccer team. On Oct. 5, the Bison host Southern Nazarene and two days later travel to East Central.  OBU is coming off a 1-1 week in which it blanked Harding 5-0 before falling late to Ouachita, 1-0. Those results moved the Bison's record to 3-4-1 and 2-1 in the GAC.

A week ago, Tori Kitchel led Oklahoma Baptist with a pair of goals and an assist. Those totals boosted her point total to seven, which is second-best on the team behind Hannah White (10). To date, Kitchel and White rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Great American Conference in points.

Senior Hannah Evans is slotted in first in the league with four assists to round out OBU's top offensive statistical leaders. Defensively, goalie Ireland Jeffrey is second in the GAC in goals against average (0.90).

As a team, OBU leads the GAC in shots (15.5), points (43), assists (15) and is tied for first with 14 goals.

Here's a look at the Bison's opponents this week:

Southern Nazarene | Great American Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 2-5-1

The Storm are off to a tough start, posting a 1-7 record including an 0-2 GAC mark. Their defense has been the issue, allowing at least three goals in those seven defeats. Currently, SNU has given up 35 goals, a 4.38-per-match average. That ranks seventh in the conference.

Coming into the season, coach Julie Duncan's team was picked to finish sixth in the GAC.

Here are the key players for SNU:

No. 5 Kaitlyn Deaton | Leads the team with five assists; Recorded three assists against Texas Permian Basin on Sept. 16, which is one off from tying SNU's single-game record.

No. 22 Alejandre Andrade | Spring All-GAC Honorable Mention; Ranks second in the GAC in goals (6) and points (13) and leads in shots (5.0); Has scored in five of seven games played this season.

East Central | Great American Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 4-6

Like SNU, the East Central Tigers have had a rough go this campaign. Through six matches, they are 1-5 including losses in their last three games. Previously, ECU lost to the Bison 3-0 on Sept. 23 in a match in which it failed to record a single shot on-goal. The Tigers' troubles have them ranked near the bottom of the GAC in every major statistical category including goals (4), points (12) and assists (4).

Coming into the fall season, head coach Riley Bailey's team was slotted in fourth in the GAC Preseason Poll.

Here are the key players for ECU:

No. 1 McKenna Leveling | Leads the GAC in saves per game (9.0); Ranks second in save percentage (.857)

No. 8 Abbie Morris | Team leader in points (3); Is fourth in the GAC in shots (3.67)

No. 27 Tanja Baubock | Slotted sixth in the GAC in shots (3.5); Scored the game-winning goal vs. St. Mary's on Sept. 11
