Bison Volleyball: Week 7 Preview

SHAWNEE – No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist hosts Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Arkansas this weekend for a pair of Great American Conference matches starting on Friday. The contests are a part of Dig Pink weekend in which teams raise funds for metastatic breast cancer research.

Last week, the green and gold went 2-1 with wins against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Harding. OBU stands at 12-3 and 5-2 in the GAC, which is good for third place in the standings. The Bison are at or near the top of the GAC in numerous categories this season including hitting percentage (.244), assists (12.6), kills (13.77), opponent hitting percentage (.145) and blocks (2.3).
 
Nationally, OBU is ranked in the top-25 in three different categories: kills per set (19th), assists (21st) and blocks (25th). Helping lead the charge are several players.
 
Kaylee Buell is second in the GAC in assists (9.85) while Malia Leatherland is fifth in points (2.6) and sixth in kills (3.19). Middle blocker Audrey Poupard checks in at No. 22 in the nation in blocks (1.20) and libero Diana Carranza is sixth in the GAC in digs (4.32).

Arkansas-Monticello | Great American Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 6-6
 
The Blossoms are coming off a 3-1 loss to East Central on Oct. 9. UAM is 7-11 this season, under the direction of third-year coach Jocelyn Garcia. Leading up to the fall campaign, Monticello was picked to finish eighth in the GAC Preseason Poll.
 
Statistically, UAM ranks from the middle to the bottom in the GAC. Its highest mark is fourth in digs (16.54), while offensively, the Blossoms are ninth in hitting percentage (.156) and 12th in assists (9.66) and kills (10.69).
 
Here are the top players for the Blossoms:
No. 13 Katelyn Richbourg | Ranks fifth in the GAC in digs (4.57)
No. 15 Jamie Agnew | Leads the team with 167 kills; Ranks 19th in the GAC with 2.53 kills per set
No. 21 Kalin Duncan | Team leader in assists (437) and is 14th in service aces (18).
 
Southern Arkansas | Great American Conference | Spring 2021 Record: 1-10
 
Like Monticello, SAU (5-12, 1-6 GAC) has struggled leading into this weekend. The Muleriders have lost five of six and are coming off a 3-0 loss to East Central. Coached by Lindsey Parks, Southern Arkansas was picked to finish in 12th in the GAC Preseason Poll. This will be the sixth all-time matchup between OBU and SAU with the Bison owning a 5-0 record.
 
Through 17 matches, the Muleriders have not found much consistency on offense or defense. They rank eleventh in both assists (9.67) and kills (10.87). Defensively, SAU is tenth in opponent hitting percentage (.195) and twelfth in digs (12.74).

No. 3 Abby Bermudez | Is sixth in the GAC in blocks (0.85) and 11th in attack percentage (.288)
No. 4 Morgan Schuster | Spring 2021 All-GAC Second Team selection; Ranks 5th in assists (8.49)
No. 18 Victoria White | Leads SAU with 169 kills; That mark ranks 10th in the GAC; Is also ninth in points (3.29)
