CANYON, Texas - The Oklahoma Baptist women's basketball team could not overcome a tough shooting night as they fell to 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M on the road by the score of 74-50.
Despite a great fourth quarter where the Bison shot 8 of 15 (53%) from the field, the Bison were only 20 of 66 (30%) from the field and 5 of 18 (28%) from behind the arc. OBU did not get to the line much, but did finish 5 of 5 from the charity stripe. Turnovers did not help OBU as well as they finished with 21 total.
West Texas finished 30 of 73 (41%) from the field and 8 of 30 (27%) from deep. The Lady Buffs had 36 points inside the paint and 23 points off turnovers.Â
After falling behind 6-2 in the early goings of the first quarter, OBU charged ahead with five straight points all coming from
Kaylee Hurst to take a 7-6 lead. That lead pushed to 9-8 after a lay in from
Andreja Peciuraite. The Lady Buffs scored the final four points to lead 13-9 after one period.
River Romine hit a jumper to start the second quarter to cut the deficit to 13-11 before West Texas went on a 14-2 run to move ahead 27-13. The Lady Buffs took a 35-20 lead going into the break.
OBU could not get much going in the third quarter as the lead pushed out to 22 going into the fourth. The lead got as high as 34 in the fourth, but OBU closed the game strong including a 7-0 run to finish the game in the loss.
Kayla Highfill led all scorers with eight points off the bench while Hurst added five points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Jenni Beebe scored six while
Jacie Engler added five.
Melissa Southard put together a great all-around game with four points, seven rounds, and two steals.
Haylee Webber had four points and two blocks.
West Texas was led by Lexy Hightower and Jayla Burgess with 12 points each while Lauren Taylor and Jillian Sowell each had 11.
OBU will look for their first win of the season on Thursday evening inside the Noble Complex as they welcome in East Central beginning at 5:30 PM. Live video and radio coverage will be provided via the Bison Sports Network.
