NORMAN, Okla. - Less than a year removed from getting blanketed by the Mustangs 7-0, the Oklahoma Baptist men's tennis team got its revenge on Friday evening as the Bison edge out No. 15 Midwestern St. 4-3 in Norman, Okla. at the University of Oklahoma.
The win over the nationally ranked Mustangs was OBU's biggest win in the Coach Proctor era to date.
Gutsy doubles play proved worthwhile for the Bison. After falling at No. 2, duos
Andres Graterol/
Bruno Suiama at No. 1 and
Kaey-Den Tan/
Matias Le Fort at No. 3 gave OBU the doubles nod with wins of 7-5 and 6-4, respectively.
With only needing three doubles wins to secure the match, singles started out in MSU's favor as they took the first two finishes, getting within two more individual victories to clinch the overall match.
After
Aaron Brewer won his match 6-1, 6-3, MSU took the match at No. 3, leaving the Mustangs one win shy of clinching the match with two to go.
Matias Le Fort got the Bison one win closer as he won at the No. 4 slot 6-3, 7-6, improving his single record to 3-1.
With the match locked at 3-3, newcomer
Bruno Suiama saw his chance to put his stamp on the Bison program in his young OBU career.
After dropping the first set 6-2, Suiama stormed back to win the final two sets 6-3 a piece, giving Oklahoma Baptist the 4-3 victory.
After starting out 0-2 at the hands of two Division I opponents, OBU has won two in a row to even their record at 2-2. Next up for OBU is a trip to Springfield, Missouri where they will take on Drury.
