SHAWNEE - Athletics Director
Robert Davenport tabbed
Mereta Newpower as the head coach of the Oklahoma Baptist women's lacrosse program on Friday afternoon.
"We are thrilled to welcome back
Mereta Newpower as head women's lacrosse coach on Bison Hill," said Davenport. "Mereta has a working knowledge of both the university and the lacrosse program and I see a roadmap to success for the program. I know Mereta is the right fit to lead our women's lacrosse program."
Newpower returns to Bison Hill after she served as head coach for the 2015 season. During that season, OBU compiled an 11-4 record, including six straight wins to start the season, and a 3-3 mark in the NWLL.
"I am so happy to be back at OBU and serving as the head women's lacrosse coach," said Newpower. "Being here is such a blessing and an honor. This is a great group of student-athletes and I am so excited to coach them."
During the 2015 season, OBU had two 40 goal scorers under the direction of Newpower in Paige Morrison (49) and Hannah Dowell (43). Morrison set school records at the time in goals (49) and points (58) for the Bison. Morrison, along with
Allison Ingrim, were NWLL All-West Region selections.
After her time at OBU, Newpower coached a pair of club lacrosse teams in Tenacity10 and Bellaire.
Newpower is a 2014 graduate of OBU, earning a degree in Kinesiology with a focus Physiology and Wellness. She takes over for Jordan Beech, who spent the last four seasons as head coach of the Bison.
The Bison open the season up on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. in an exhibition against the University of Oklahoma before opening up the regular season at home on Feb. 15 against Maryville at 11 a.m.
