BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Oklahoma Baptist men's soccer team got a golden goal from junior
Peterson Costa in the first overtime period to open the 2019 season with a 3-2 overtime win over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.
OBU out shot SBU 17-12 including a 9-5 advantage in the first half, but SBU had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. The Bison out shot the Bearcats 3-0 in the overtime period.
Despite SBU erasing a 2-0 deficit and forcing the extra frame, it was Costa that found the game-winner in the 94th minute to push OBU ahead.
Sophomore Bruno Feirrera got the scoring started in the 10th minute on an assist from seniorÂ
Alejandro Castillo to give OBU a 1-0 lead. OBU made it a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute asÂ
David Estrada netted his first goal of the season.
OBU held control in the second half, but the Bearcats finally answered with a flurry of goal, getting one back off the foot of Isaiah Waddy followed by a goal moments later in the 78th minute from Nicolas Mattaldi. Neither team could find a go-ahead goal as they game move into extra time before Costa's game winner less than four minutes into the period.
The Bison move to 1-0 on the season and it is their second straight overtime win in their opener. The Bison have now won four straight season openers.
OBU will look to carry that momentum into Saturday as they head to Oklahoma City for a 7:30pm kick-off against Oklahoma Christian.
