SHAWNEE – Battling cold and rainy conditions, as well as a resilient Southwestern (Texas) team, Oklahoma Baptist women's lacrosse was able to pull out the victory, 18-16, on Senior Day. The win wraps up a 4-1 record against nonconference opponents.
Â
Looking up at a two-goal hole with just under 24 minutes to play in the contest, OBU used a five-goal run to break open the game and see out the victory.
Taylor Skomp converted off a feed from
Lauren McCormack to get the run started and make it 11-10 before
Madison Gordon took the ensuing draw straight through the Pirates defense to draw OBU level. McCormack, Skomp and
Devin Miller then each beat SU's goalie to make it 14-11; the Lady Bison wouldn't trail for the rest of the game.
Â
"It was a great response from the offense today, especially considering how yesterday went," said OBU head coach
Jordan Beech. "We've battled these kinds of conditions all year, and I think it's helped toughen us up a little bit."
Â
McCormack led all players with eight points thanks to five goals and three assists. Gordon and Skomp both also completed hat tricks, with Gordon's standing as the first of her career on Bison Hill.
Shay Morgan and Miller each scored two apiece, while
Nina Handley,
Morgan McCoy and
Kiersten Steinbrugge each tallied one goal.
Â
In goal,
Lauren Scott earned the win after coming on in relief of an injured
Courtney Barnickle. Defensively, OBU scooped up 43 ground balls, led by Handley's six and
Savannah Tompkins's five.
Â
Prior to the game, the Lady Bison honored their lone senior, Tompkins, with a short ceremony.
Â
"I'm pumped we were able to give Savannah a win on Senior Day," said Beech. "She's been a foundational piece to the growth of OBU Lacrosse, and really been a steadying presence for a young team this year."
Â
Oklahoma Baptist (5-6) returns to action next Saturday, April 20 when they host Rockhurst at 11 a.m. in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the OBU Lacrosse Complex.
