SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist University put together a determined effort and gave visiting Henderson State a stern test before falling 86-62 in women's basketball action Thursday in Shawnee.
The loss dropped OBU to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the Great American Conference. Henderson improved to 10-2 and 5-1 in league play. The Lady Bison remain at home for their next game when they host Ouachita Baptist Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. "Buy-one, get-One" tickets will be available for purchase as part of the OBU's month-long "Fanuary" fan-appreciation campaign.
Autumn Avina led OBU with 24 points while teammate
Victoria Blankenship added 17. The two combined for 41 of the team's 62 points. HSU was led Hailey Estes with 24 points.
The Lady Bison struggled to find much offensive rhythm against the Reddies connecting on 22-of-58 shots for 37.9 percent from the field. OBU was just three-of-18 for 16.7 percent from three-point distance.
OBU was outrebounded 42-29. Blankenship had 10 rebounds for the Lady Bison and collected her fifth double-double of the season.
Katy Custer got OBU to within one at 23-22 with her basket with 6:47 remaining in the second quarter. The Reddies then scored the next eight points on their way to a 38-30 halftime lead.
Blankenship kept the Lady Bison within striking distance in the third quarter. She scored a string of nine consecutive points, which included a three-point play as she converted a tough shot while being fouled. Henderson built their advantage to 57-46 after three quarters.
HSU outscored OBU 29-16 in the final frame. The final score was the game's largest margin.
