Men Stay in First, Beat UAM in Overtime

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist stayed atop the Great American Conference men's basketball standings but it was not without a test. The Bison fought back for a 73-72 overtime victory against visiting Arkansas-Monticello Saturday in Shawnee.

The win improved OBU to 11-8 overall and 10-2 in the GAC. The Bison are tied with Southern Nazarene for first as the two leaders continue to distance themselves from its nearest pursuer.

Dishon Lowery had 17 points and Antonio Wade hit a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to send OBU out as winners.

Both teams ended regulation tied at 62. UAM scored the first six points before the Bison began to climb back. Harrison Stoddart and Turner each connected on a pair of free throws before Brantly Thompson made his second and final three-pointer to bring OBU within two points at 71-69 with 1:13 to play.

Lowery tied the game at 71 with a basket with 39 seconds to play. UAM made just one-of-two free throws on its possession leaving the door open for Turner and his teammates to snag the victory.

The Bison finished the game making 26-of-57 (45.8%) from the field including seven three pointers. OBU held a sizeable advantage at the free throw line making 14-of-19 (74%) while UAM was six-of-11 (55%).

OBU will resume action Thursday, Jan. 31 at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
