SHAWNEE – Lacrosse kicks off the 2018 season Friday, when Oklahoma Baptist travels to Tigerville, South Carolina, to face North Greenville in the season opener.
Â
Friday's game will not only open up the season for the Lady Bison, but is the first women's lacrosse game across all divisions. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Central.
Â
OBU finished with a 4-10 record last season, averaging 7.50 goals per game on a .341 shooting percentage. The Lady Bison led the nation with 12.93 caused turnovers per contest.
Â
Lauren McCormack is the leading returner on offense with 15 goals scored and set an OBU record with 58 draw controls. Senior midfielder
Allison Ingrim averaged 2.43 caused turnovers, which ranked 13
th in country. Sophomore
Courtney Barnickle will start in goal for the second straight season after setting a program record with 103 saves last season.
Â
NGU had a 10-9 record in 2017 and reached the Conference Carolinas semifinal. The Crusaders averaged 11.58 goals on .471 shooting. Hanna Hawkins is the top returner after scoring 39 goals in 2017. Rachel Kellogg had a team-high 52 draw controls and Sydney Taylor registered 173 saves with a 9.54 goals-allowed average.
Â
"They're going to be a very disciplined team on defense and they like to run the ball on offense," said OBU Head Coach
Jordan Beech. "If we can stop that fast break, slow them down and make them actually try to feed the ball into the eight-meter, I think we'll actually be better off."
Â
Beech owns a 1-1 record in season openers, defeating University of Saint Mary in 2016 and falling to Alabama-Huntsville last season.
Â
The Lady Bison will wrap up their South Carolina road trip Saturday against Southern Wesleyan.
