Records Fall in Bison Loss at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Oklahoma Baptist got a school-record 493 passing yards from Preston Haire and a school-record 13 receptions by Cagney Roberson in a 45-37 loss at Arkansas-Monticello Saturday.
 
Haire broke his own record of 473 yards against Southern Arkansas and Roberson broke the record of 12 he had shared with Nyko Symonds.
 
Haire passed for the 493 yards on a school-record 43 completed passes on a school-record 64 attempts with a record-tying five touchdown passes.
 
For the first time, five different Bison caught a touchdown pass. Josh Arnold had a school-record 18 tackles. Kris Greer finished with 10.
 
Roberson collected 13 catches for 129 yards while Josh Pettijohn caught nine passes for 118 yards.
 
Tyler Stuever rushed 17 times for 55 yards.
 
The Weevils rolled out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, pulling a few tricks out of the playbook.
 
UAM had the ball for a chance at a three-touchdown lead with four tries inside the OBU five but the Bison defense stiffened and Myles Russell recovered a fumble on fourth down.
 
That ignited the team, who fired off consecutive touchdown marches.
 
OBU went 97 yards on 12 plays to get on the scoreboard. The drive featured a 13-yard run by Haire and 11-yard Haire passes to Noah McGraw and Roberson. Haire threw a 20-yard pass to Roberson to set up a touchdown by that combo from five yards out. The TD cut UAM's led to 14-7 with 11:07 left on the first quarter clock.
 
The Bison tied the score on an 11-play, 93-yard drive. Tyler Stuever went 18 yards and Haire passed to Pettijohn for 22 yards before hooking up with Dillon Smith for a 20-yard scoring pass.
 
UAM scored late in the half to take a 21-14 lead to halftime.
 
Luke Wendl kicked a 27-yard field goal to narrow the UAM lead to 21-17 with 9:41 left in the third quarter.
 
The Weevils went up 28-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Haire connected with Pettijohn for 15 yards and Roberson for 16 before throwing to Stuever for a 57-yard pass and run to make it 28-24 with 12:16 left in the game. The drive covered 93 yards on six plays.
 
After a UAM score, Haire completed passes of 23 yards to Abel Wills and 13 to Pettijohn to set up an eight-yard touchdown pass to Pettijohn to make it 35-30 with 8:28 to play.
 
Monticello would score 10 more points before the Bison scored with a minute to play. OBU covered 75 yards on nine plays, culminating with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Haire to McGraw.
 
The Bison finish the road portion of the schedule Saturday at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford.
