SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist opens the 2017-18 men's basketball season Friday at Southwest Baptist in a 7 p.m. tip.
 
The Bison are 6-4 all-time against the Bearcats. Southwest Baptist won the last meeting, 72-63, in the 1984-85 season.
 
Southwest Baptist was 15-13 last season under former John Brown coach Clark Sheehy. The team returns three starters, including All-MIAA third-team selection Logan Hoovey, who averaged 13.3 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game.
 
OBU is 1-1 in season openers in the university's NCAA era. The Bison handled Bethany College 69-61 in 2015 and lost last season to Ouachita Baptist, 75-62. Oklahoma Baptist has won 10 of its last 11 season openers.
 
Chandler Rickey enters the season with 1,045 career points. He is 370 points from matching Emmanuel Wilson for the No. 10 spot on OBU's all-time scoring list. If Rickey matches last year's output, he will finish his career with 1473 points - the eight-best output in OBU history. 
Vladimir Nemcok has 538 points at OBU and 820 career points, having scored 282 as a freshman under 
Quinn Wooldridge at Southwestern Christian.
 
Britt Hammons lit up St. Gregory's in his unofficial debut for the Bison with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the exhibition at St. Gregory's last weekend.
 
Brothers Zach and 
Caleb Norris take the floor for the first time as college teammates today. Caleb is expected to start as a red-shirt sophomore and Zach is a graduate transfer from Oklahoma Christian. They are the sons of former Lady Bison Wendy Vaughan Norris and former Bison player and Lady Bison head coach Scott Norris.
