Haire Completes Record 32 Passes

SHAWNEE – Preston Haire completed a school-record 32 passes in a 14-13 loss to Henderson State Saturday at Crain Family Stadium at the Hurt Athletic Center.

Haire was on target for 32 of his 54 attempts without an interception for 267 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bison tied the game late, but an OBU attempt to win in regulation went for naught as a miscue on a faked extra point left the squad a point shy.

Alex Lewis was on the receiving end of 11 of those Haire passes, coming up one catch short of the school record while establishing a new NCAA-era high for the Bison in that category.

OBU scored on its second possession of the game with the Bison using two penalties and a 14-yard scoring pass to Stephan Turner from Haire with 9:56 showing on the first quarter clock.

The Reddies threatened to score in the second quarter, moving the ball from their own 10 to the Bison 7, before Ke'Landus Culton picked off Andrew Black in the end zone.

OBU led 7-0 at the half.

Henderson State scored both of its touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 14-7 lead, but left the door open by missing a field goal. OBU had missed a field goal in their first possession of the fourth quarter.

The Bison took over at the 20 and converted two fourth down plays in the 80-yard march and Haire passed to Lewis for a two-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left in the game for the final 14-13 margin.

Cagney Roberson led the team with 62 yards receiving on his five catches and Isaiah Mallory led the team with 52 yards on 18 carries.

Defensively, three Bison had double-figures in tackles, led by Jason Lee with 12 while Myles Russell added 11 and Dante Foster 10. Foster also had the team's lone tackle for loss and broke up on pass while Russell broke up two. Jay Jordan also had a break-up. As a unit, the OBU defense had its best game of the season, allowing just the 14 points.

Hayden Ashley averaged 35.6 yards punting and placed four of his five punts inside the 20.

The Bison return to action Saturday with a home date against Arkansas-Monticello. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
