OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – In the first road test of the season for Oklahoma Baptist, the Bison found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-3 scoreline when they faced the Stars of Oklahoma City University on Thursday night in Oklahoma City.
Vicente Castillo and
Thiago Dos Santos scored goals in the loss.
Â
The Bison got off to another slow start as they found themselves trailing 1-0 inside the first three minutes of the match. However, OBU fought back, and, in the 11th minute, freshman Dos Santos opened his Bison account with his first goal on a good shot past OCU's Vladamir Kalajdzic to level the scoring. Unfortunately, a free kick and a penalty kick again put Oklahoma Baptist on the back foot, and were unable to narrow the gap, heading into halftime down 3-1.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist thought they had a lifeline following a foul by OCU that gave the Bison a penalty in the 55th minute. Castillo shot the ball low and away from Kalajdzic, but the goal was waved off as a player entered the box early. On the retake, Castillo experience the same success as the first attempt, but again the goal was waved off for a similar infraction as the first time. Finally, on the third attempt, Castillo saw his effort saved and OBU still trailed 3-1.
Â
The Bison adopted a more attacking shape as the match wore on, generating several great chances. Twice late in the match Castillo had the chance for redemption for the spot thanks to that attacking impetus. The senior forward buried both efforts in the 79th and 82nd, but it wasn't enough as OBU suffered a 5-3 setback.
Â
Castillo led the team with five shots, including three on goal, while Dos Santos and
Jonathan Martinez each had two shots put on-frame.
Colin Spencer was saddled with the loss, his second of the year, but recorded seven saves on 12 shots faced.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at the OBU Soccer Complex.
