Bison Soccer Deals Drovers Loss

Box Score (html)

SHAWNEE – For the first time in since 2010, the Oklahoma Baptist Bison emerged victorious over the Drovers from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The 3-1 decision in favor of OBU is the first win against USAO for OBU head coach Anthony Yousey since he took over the side in 2013.

Yousey made several changes to the lineup after OBU dropped their last two matches by a combined score of 8-3, with four different Bison making their first start of the season, including freshman goalkeeper Bronson Wise.

Oklahoma Baptist bent, but didn't break, in the first half as USAO pushed on offense. Wise's goal was peppered with 10 shots, including four that forced him into action, but the freshman was able to keep the score level. Offensively, the Bison only generated two shots, neither on-goal, though a beautifully worked combination between Alejandro Castillo and Jonathan Martinez just narrowly missed to the right of goal.

The Bison came out pressing forward in the second half, and the gambit worked as the run of play opened up more for OBU in the second stanza. Vicente Castillo worked his way down the right flank, drawing a defender before slotting it to Martinez who coolly finished in the lower right corner to put OBU up 1-0 in the 55th minute.

Oklahoma Baptist's joy doubled 13 minutes later in the 68th minute of play as the younger Castillo, Alejandro, played a thru ball down the right side that a streaking Thiago Dos Santos was able to latch onto. The Brazilian struck his shot far post, besting USAO goalkeeper Austen Parker to his left, and OBU saw their advantage increase to 2-0. The advantage wouldn't last long, however, as a long-range effort robbed Wise of a first career clean sheet in his first-ever start as a Bison in the 76th minute.

A frenetic pace overtook the game as the match entered the final ten minutes of regulation. The Bison earned a corner in the 84th minute, and a looping cross in from the flag by Jesus Andrade and Martinez rose highest to meet the ball. Martinez's header snuck in just under the bar and between Parker's hands to restore the two-goal advantage, and Oklahoma Baptist saw out a 3-1 win.

"It feels really good to get this win, it was a great team effort," said Yousey. "Bronson did really well for us, commanded his box well. We played a lot of freshmen tonight who gave us good minutes. The guys were working for each other and it showed."

Martinez was the offensive focal point on the night, with four shots. Both of his shots on-goal found the back of the net. Dos Santos took two shots, and Alejandro Castillo one. Wise gained his first collegiate win in his first career start while posting seven saves against one goal allowed.

Oklahoma Baptist resumes action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. as they take on Southwestern Christian at the OBU Soccer Complex.
