SHAWNEE – After being shut out the last two matches in Great American Conference play, the Oklahoma Baptist Women's Soccer offense lit up the scoreboard on Tuesday night in a decisive 3-0 victory in a rivalry match against Southern Nazarene. The win is the first for OBU amongst GAC competitors in 2016.
Â
It didn't take long for the Lady Bison to put their stamp on the match, as
Markella Suka notched her first goal of the season to put OBU up 1-0 at the seven-minute mark. The senior forward beat her defender on the back post, heading in an in-swinging cross from
Jennifer Goethe on the left flank.
Â
Despite creating 12 more shots throughout the first half, the Lady Bison were unable to find a second goal in the first 45 minutes.
Emma Beck wasn't troubled much, being only called into action twice, but proving equal to both chances created by the Crimson Storm.
Â
Thirteen minutes into the second stanza, and Oklahoma Baptist doubled their advantage, courtesy of
Kerregan Edwards' first goal of the season. The newly-minted midfielder, dribbled her way across the box before firing a curling shot just over the fingertips of SNU's Natasha Fuentes, nestling in the side-netting to put OBU up 2-0.
Â
The Lady Bison had one more goal in them as, in the 72nd minute,
Yamilex Sanchez sprung a streaking
Kelsey Lowe for a breakaway by slipping a perfectly-weighted thru-ball between two defenders. Lowe got behind the defensive line, and, with only the keeper to beat, precisely measured her chipped shot to give OBU a 3-0 lead.
Â
Southern Nazarene chased the match for most of the final 18 minutes, producing three saves from Beck and one from
Morgan Magee who combined for the clean sheet. The most dangerous chance came in the 77th minute off a free kick in a dangerous area, but Beck displayed cat-like reflexes in pushing Taylor Jester's shot just wide of the goal.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist (4-3, 1-2 GAC) is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Ada, Oklahoma, for a meeting with East Central. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Tiger Field.
