DURANT, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist Volleyball remained perfect in Great American Conference competition, taking Tuesday night's match against Southeastern Oklahoma State in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 26-24, 25-20). The Lady Bison are now one of just three teams with an unblemished record in GAC play.
Â
The Savage Storm jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first set, but OBU steadily worked their way back with kills by
Cadyn Laing and
Nicole Fleitman. The Lady Bison finally managed to catch SOSU at 20-20 after a trio of scores by
Adonica Wright,
Taylor Williams and
Kynnedy Myers, but the Storm claimed the next two points to keep OBU at arm's length at 22-20. Sparked by an attack error by SOSU,
Darby Maclea held serve over the last four points, scoring an ace, while
Taylor Williams laid down the final kill of the set off a feed by Myers, 25-22 to give OBU a 1-0 lead.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist started out on the front foot in the second set, claiming a 5-3 lead and holding a narrow margin over SOSU until three straight points gave the Savage Storm a 7-6 lead. Not soon after, a triplet of errors by OBU created some breathing room for the Storm. A nine-point run would bring SOSU to match point, and though OBU fought off two set points, the Savage Storm score a 25-16 win in the second set to knot the match up at 1-all.
Â
Despite OBU leading until late in the third set, it became a tight competition as neither side could generate much of a run until SOSU made a four-point run when the match was tied 18-18.
Taylor Williams started a three-point run for the Lady Bison that was capped by a Maclea ace, but the Savage Storm eventually reached set point at 24-22. A slew of attack errors by SOSU helped the Lady Bison stave off set point, and a combo block by Laing and Fleitman gained OBU the pivotal third set for a 2-1 lead.
Â
In the third set, the Lady Bison again jumped out to a quick lead before the Savage Storm came racing back. Trailing 6-5, the lethal combination of Myers-to-Fleitman kicked off a 6-1 run that gave OBU an 11-8 lead that the Lady Bison would never relinquish. Defense carried OBU down the stretch as the Savage Storm recorded their worst attack percentage of the night at .079, and back-to-back kills by Laing and Wright clinched the match for Oklahoma Baptist.
Â
Laing and Williams tied for the team lead with 11 kills each, which also stands as a career-best mark for Williams. For the third time in four matches, Myers topped 40 assists, dishing out 43 helpers while recording four aces and three kills.
Shekinah Sharpe led the team with 19 digs, a new season high, while Maclea posted 12 digs and tied Myers with a match-high four aces.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist (8-7, 2-0 GAC) returns to the Noble Complex on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. meeting with rival Southern Nazarene. Lady Bison fans are encouraged to bring new or lightly used shoes in support of OBU Volleyball's shoe drive in conjunction with Witness Kicks.
