SHAWNEE – Despite an early goal by
Vicente Castillo, the Oklahoma Baptist men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Southwestern Christian on Tuesday night at the OBU Soccer Complex.
The Bison gave up an early lead to the Eagles as an opportunistic ball was crossed in that managed to curve into the goal in the 5th minute. Parity was restored not long after for the Bison, as a foul in the area gave OBU a penalty kick, their third-straight match with a PK, in the 19th minute. Castillo calmly stepped up to the spot and sent it home to tie the affair up at 1-1. Despite ten shots combined between the squads, both goalkeepers were tested only twice, with
Bronson Wise and his counterpart in goal, Caleb Swanepoel, both recording one save.
Oklahoma Baptist was outdueled by SCU in the second half, surrendering 10 shots, including four on-goal. The Bison defense finally succumbed to the pressure, giving up goals in the 59th and 72nd minutes and creating a 3-1 gap. Reigning Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Jonathan Martinez and
Jesus Andrade both sent dangerous efforts towards the Eagles' goal as time marched toward 90 minutes, but both shots were saved.
Oklahoma Baptist will now begin their preparation for Southwest Baptist, who they will meet in Bolivar, Missouri, on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
