MASON, Ohio – Mike Gould took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and Oklahoma Baptist scored a 9-2 win over Oakland City in the NCCAA World Series Wednesday night at Prasco Park.
Gould (8-1) struck out eight in eight innings of work with two runs, one unearned, on two hits. Brad Adams struck out two batters in a clean ninth inning of work.
The Bison started the scoring in the top of the third with an RBI single by Dustyn Cook, but the Oaks tied the game in the home half with a three-base error, followed by a sacrifice fly by Jamie Valvano.
OBU took control of the game with a six-run fourth inning, including an RBI single by Felipe Gonzalez, an RBI triple by Joseph Moran, an RBI single by Cody Ziegler, an RBI triple by Kevin Olmeda and an RBI single by Cook.
Brandon Cuddy added a sacrifice fly in the sixth for an 8-1 lead.
OCU broke up the no-hitter with two hits in the eighth, cutting the lead to 8-2.
Moran doubled in a run for a 9-2 lead in the ninth.
OBU got three hits from Cook and two apiece from Ryan Joyce, Gonzalez, Moran and Olmeda to lead the 13-hit attack.
In other Pool A games Wednesday, Oakland City defeated Judson 2-1, Judson defeated Hiwassee 7-3 and OBU defeated Toccoa Falls 16-0. After day one in pool play, OBU is 2-0, Judson and Oakland City are 1-1 and Toccoa Falls and Hiwassee are 0-1.
The Bison play Hiwassee at noon and Judson at 6 p.m. Thursday.
In Pool B games Wednesday, Warner beat Southwestern Christian 9-7, Bethesda defeated Southwestern Christian 5-2 and Campbellsville beat Trinity Christian 11-1 and Warner 3-2. Campbellsville leads the pool at 2-0, Bethesda is 1-0, Warner is 1-1, Trinity Christian is 0-1 and SCU is 0-2.
