Lady Bison Upended by Colorado Mesa

Box Score (html)

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A slow start for the Lady Bison led to a 16-1 hole at halftime as Oklahoma Baptist fell in back-to-back games for the first time this season, 22-4, to Colorado Mesa on Monday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead inside the first four minutes of the game before Hannah Dowell controlled a draw to herself and wove through a pair of defenders for OBU's first goal of the day. Unfortunately for the green-and-gold, it would be the only goal of the opening stanza as CMU rattled off 12 straight goals to put the game away.

Four more goals for the Mavericks followed at the restart before Oklahoma Baptist found their offensive rhythm. Alexis Martin started down low and found her spot to get on the board to keep her goal-scoring streak alive. Five minutes later, Savannah Tompkins, playing in front of a hometown crowd, netted her second goal of the season. The run was capped by another Martin goal off the feed from Paige Morrison. Colorado Mesa responded with two more goals in the final two minutes of the game.

"I thought we showed heart in the second half, adapting to the altitude and finding that spark from our freshmen," said OBU head coach Jordan Beech. "Unfortunately, Colorado Mesa took advantage of our slow start and we were unable to climb our way out of the hole we'd dug for ourselves."

Martin continued her hot start to her career, recording a fifth-straight multi-goal game, as she led the team in scoring with two goals. She's scored at least two goals in every game she's played.

Oklahoma Baptist won the ground ball battle 11-9. Allison Ingrim was her usual composed self on the ground, scooping up a game-high three ground balls, while Emily Bontekoe and Morrison each had two.

Ingrim and Dowell led the team with three draw controls as well, though OBU continued to struggle at a 20-8 disadvantage in the category.

The Lady Bison have a day off for travel before taking the field on Wednesday, March 16 against Fort Lewis College. First draw is slated for 3 p.m.
