SHAWNEE – Another win, another clean sheet for Oklahoma Baptist Men's Soccer, who on Monday night closed out a four-match homestand with a 3-0 win against Jarvis Christian College. The Bison went undefeated over the four-match stretch, shutting out three different opponents.
Â
A sluggish first half seized both sides through the first 30 minutes of Monday's affair, with OBU taking multiple shots that never truly tested JCC's Luis Ledezma. That all changed, however, as
Michael Stewart picked up the ball at midfield, and save for a one-two combination with
Jonathan Martinez, carried the ball all the way to goal. Though he was ushered out towards the right corner flag, the freshman defender chipped an effort that finished just under the crossbar into the left side of goal to break the deadlock in the 35th minute.
Â
The Bison got off several more shots, but lacked the finishing touch to best Ledezma a second time in the half. Regardless, OBU went into the break with a 1-0 lead despite resting several starters.
Â
At the urging of OBU head coach
Anthony Yousey, the Bison cleaned up their play in the second half. Soon after the restart,
Vicente Castillo made a clever cutback in the middle of the area, receiving a feed from his younger brother
Alejandro Castillo. Needing just one touch to create room for his shot, the older Castillo curled a shot towards the right post that snuck past the outstretched arms of a diving Ledezma to double the Bison advantage in the 52nd minute.
Â
The play turned physical from there, with the teams combining for three yellow cards in the half. Despite the rougher competition, both teams had quality chances.
Colin Spencer, making his first start since Sept. 8 against Oklahoma City, recorded his only save of the evening to preserve the clean sheet in the 77th minute off a free kick taken by JCC's Lui Ramirez.
Â
For a second consecutive game, it was
Jared Hill who put the match completely out of reach in the final minutes. He scored his second goal in as many games after receiving a thru ball from Stewart, firing it home on a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper in the final minute of the match for the final tally.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist (6-4-1) now heads to Denver, Colorado, to take on Johnson & Wales on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
