No. 9 Reddies Edge Bison 22-14

Oklahoma Baptist nearly treated its Homecoming crowd to a huge upset, but ninth-ranked Henderson State celebrated a Great American Conference football title instead at Crain Family Stadium, holding off the Bison 22-14.

Dez Stegall rushed for 145 yards on 26 carries and passed for 178 more for OBU.

The Bison led 7-0 at the half before giving up three second half touchdowns. OBU scored late in the fourth quarter and got the ball back with just over a minute to play, but could not mount the game-tying drive.

"I'm pleased with the effort but disappointed in the final result," said OBU Coach Chris Jensen. "We challenged our guys last week to make plays at the point of attack. Perseverance is strong with this team and the defense has learned to step up and make big plays."

Henderson State attempted a field goal in the second quarter but Jesse Salisbury blocked the attempt.

The Bison scored the only touchdown of the first half in the second quarter, using an 11-play 86-yard march. Stegall threw to Derek Serowski for gains of 34 and 13 yards to help the Bison march to the HSU 43.

A Stegall run of 12 yards gave OBU the ball at the 9. Frankie Edwards carried to the three and fumbled but Jacob Cheatham pounced on the loose ball in the end zone. Trey Tully added the PAT kick to make it 7-0 OBU with 32 seconds left in the first half.

The Reddies scored on a 16 yard pass Dallas Hardison pass to JaVante Mack and then converted a two-point pass from Mark Czaus to A.J. Smith for an 8-7 lead with 11:13 showing on the third quarter clock.

That Hardison-Mack combo worked for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:17 to go in the third quarter to give HSU a 15-7 lead.

The Bison put together a drive that got the team to the 16 before Sheldon Watson returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and a 22-7 margin with 13 minutes left in the game.

OBU moved the ball 65 yard on nine plays for its final scoring drive, Stegall had a 15-yard run and a 19-yard pass to Ross Britt to set up Stegall's 16-yard scoring run to the left side with 1:51 remaining in the game.

Henderson State successfully fielded the on-side kick, but OBU got the ball back after a punt, but the final Bison possession went only 17 yards – that coming on a Serowski reception.

Stegall was 14 of 32 passing for 178 yards. Serowski had 74 yards on four catches, Edwards had seven catches of 53 yards and Cagney Roberson had a 33-yard reception.

Following Stegall's 145 yards on the ground for the Bison was Cooper Koons, who had 24, including a 21-yard fake punt.

Zach Bishop led the defense with 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss and half a sack. Tanner Robertson had 1.5 tackles for loss with Brynden Pitzer and D'Ante Meeking getting one each. Ed Morgan Jr. had half a tackle for loss. Meeking also had a fumble recovery and a pass break-up. PItzer and Kimes Gilbert teamed up for a sack and Dillon Burley forced a fumble.

OBU out-gained the Reddies 408-341 for the game in front of an attendance of 4,805.

Now 2-8 on the season, the Bison finish up the season Saturday in Bethany, taking on Southern Nazarene in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
