Jason Eaker joined the Oklahoma Baptist coaching family as head men’s basketball coach in April 2018. Eaker enters his sixth season with the Bison.
Eaker, who spent one season in a Bison uniform before finishing his playing days at Hardin-Simmons University, grew up coming to OBU games. His father, Allen Eaker, is an OBU Athletics Hall of Famer who played on the 1966 OBU national championship basketball team.
Under his direction, the program has never missed a conference tournament (2018-2022), earned a Great American Conference Western Division title, made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2020-2021), and accumulated 87 wins. Furthermore, Eaker has earned a winning record in all but one of his years on Bison Hill.
Plagued with injuries in 2022-23, the Bison finished with a 13-16 overall record and 10-12 conference mark, good for seventh in the GAC. Despite its misfortunes, OBU finished with the fourth-best field-goal percentage in the league (.467) and saw D.J. Freeman earned a All-GAC Honorable Mention selection.
In 2021-22, Eaker led the Bison to a 20-9 overall record, including a 17-5 mark in GAC play. OBU concluded the regular season ranked No. 2 in the GAC standings, as 17 wins against league opponents was the most victories earned before entering the GAC tournament since joining Division II. The Bison finished with a 12-1 record at home, the best since the 2019-20 season (13-1),
Burke Putnam highlighted the Bison's postseason awards, as he was named GAC Newcomer of the Year to go along with D2CCA All-Central Region Second-Team and NABC All-District Second-Team selections. Furthermore, Putnam earned All-GAC First-Team honors while Brantly Thompson and Harrison Stoddart garnered Second-Team nods.
In the 2020-21 season, Eaker steered OBU to a 16-6 record and a 14-3 mark in conference play to earn the GAC Western Division Championship in 2021. The Bison earned an NCAA Tournament appearance and picked up the program's first tournament win since joining NCAA Division II in a 76-57 victory over Arkansas-Monticello.
The Bison were also ranked for the first time in school history, coming in at No. 24 in the D2SIDA polls during the final week of the regular season.
For his effort in 2021, Eaker was named the GAC Coach of the Year. Brantly Thompson earned All-District and First Team All-GAC honors while Jarius Hicklen was also named First Team All-GAC.
In 2020, the program earned its first ever berth into the NCAA Tournament after a 22-9 mark, which was canceled due to COVID-19. That same season after going 15-7 in GAC play, OBU made it to the Great American Conference Championship Game after upsetting three-time defending champion Southern Nazarene.
In Eaker's first year on Bison Hill, OBU finished 16-14 and 14-8 in the GAC, good for third in the conference. The Bison would make a GAC Semifinals appearance, their first ever appearance in the GAC Tournament.
Eaker has coached 12 All-GAC selections in his four seasons including GAC Newcomers of the Year, Antonio Wade (2019) and Burke Putnam (2021). Harrison Stoddart was the first four-time All-Conference selection under Eaker, while Dishon Lowery, Jarius Hicklen, and Brantly Thompson earned all-conference honors twice.
Eaker came to OBU from Mercer, where he was an assistant coach to former OBU coaching icon Bob Hoffman since 2013.
He brings 15 years of coaching experience to Bison Hill, including nine years as a NCAA Division I assistant coach. He has been in the postseason six times with three different programs and has recruited or developed 16 players that have earned All-Conference honors.
Eaker previously worked as an assistant coach at Liberty University from 2007 to 2013 after being director of basketball operations for the Flames from 2005 to 2007.
Eaker spent a year as Kelvin Sampson's graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma in the 2004-05 season. He started his basketball staff career as Hoffman's video coordinator at Texas Pan-American in 2003.
After transferring to HSU, Eaker was a two-year starter for the Cowboys, earning two academic All-Conference honors and All-Conference in 2002.
He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Texas Pan-American in 2004 and a master's degree in higher education leadership from Mercer in 2015.
Eaker and his wife, Meredith, have one son, Isaac Arrow.
