Brian Whitlock was named as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Oklahoma Baptist in August 2022. He was named head coach of the men’s and women’s track & field programs in August 2023 after serving as an assistant track & field coach the previous year.
During his time on Bison Hill, Whitlock has produced a pair of individual national champions and more than 30 All-Americans in track & field.
The Bison women’s track & field team have won a pair of GAC outdoor titles under Whitlock, while the men have earned three runner-up finishes.
He was also part of a women’s outdoor title in his lone season as an assistant coach, a year in which the men also finished second in the GAC.
On the cross-country course, Whitlock has led both the men’s and women’s programs to four-straight top-five finishes at the GAC Championships.
In 2025, the men’s squad made program history by advancing to its first-ever NCAA Championship after a seventh-place finish at regionals. The Bison track and field programs also produced the GAC Male and Female Athletes of the Year in back-to-back seasons.
Sean Dixon won the men’s award in 2025 and Jamora Horace took home the women’s honor in 2026. Each athlete was a national champion in their final season on Bison Hill.
Dixon won the men’s 400-meter hurdles, while Horace was the women’s high jump champion.
Whitlock came to OBU following an incredible run at Wayland Baptist, where he coached for 18 seasons and turned the Pioneers into a perennial powerhouse in both cross country and track & field.
During his time at WBU, the Pioneers won 12 NAIA national titles in track & field and were the national runners-up another 12 times, including two runner-up finishes in cross country.
A nine-time NAIA National Coach of the Year, Whitlock coached nearly 600 All-Americans, 106 individual or relay national champions, and saw his teams set 50 school records and eight national records.
The Pioneers won the men’s 4x400 relay at nine-straight national title meets.
Whitlock is a 2001 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist, where he was a Sooner Athletic Conference cross country champion and an NAIA All-American.
He resides in Shawnee with his wife, Mandy, and four children, Madilynn, Jacob, Londyn, and Brayden.
