ALVA — Oklahoma Baptist used a relentless offensive attack to power past Northwestern Oklahoma State, 14-5, in six innings on Sunday at the Alva Recreation Complex. With the win, the Bison improved to 23-14 and 16-5 in the Great American Conference. For they Lady Rangers, they dipped to 9-26 and 5-16 in the league.
The Bison scored in five of six innings on this day. After a one-run first, they broke it open with a four-run second, highlighted by a
Kaley Cook triple and RBI knocks from
Sammie Greene,
Ally Ryan and
Morgan Max. For Cook, that was her sixth triple of the year, one away from the school's single-season record of seven set by Amy Lassetter in 1984.
Oklahoma Baptist continued the onslaught in the fourth with two more runs, courtesy of a two-run single by
Abby Laskowski. OBU then put the game away in the sixth when it tallied a half-dozen runs.
Cook registered an RBI double while
Greenlee Wells added another run-scoring knock. Freshman pinch-hitter Peyton Bragg then delivered the final blow with a two-RBI single. In total, OBU tallied 12 hits and drew 10 walks.
In the circle, ace
Jaycee Shaffer improved to 13-2, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowing four earned runs.
Northwestern stayed within striking distance early, plating solo runs in the first and fourth frames, and rallying for three in the sixth thanks to RBI hits from Macy Spearman and Rachel Sherwood. However, it wasn't enough to match OBU's firepower. The Rangers committed three errors and used three pitchers, with starter Caitlin Brown taking the loss.
Tomorrow, the two squads will meet for a doubleheader starting at noon.
