Bison Drop Season Opener Against Augustana

LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma Baptist (0-1, 0-0 GAC) opened its 2024 season with a 4-0 loss to Augustana (1-0, 0-0 NISC) on the inaugural day of the Mardi Gras Invitational.

The Bison were held to just two hits, which only happened twice a season ago. Meanwhile, the Vikings rattled off four connections against All-American pitcher Kayleigh Jones.

In 4.1 innings of work, Jones struck out five and walked two of the 24 batters she faced. Jones forced five fly-outs and two ground-outs before Maggie Place came in as relief.

In her OBU debut, Place recorded one strikeout in a little over an inning of action.

Seniors Adi Reese and Emily Adler notched OBU's only hits, a part of 1-for-2 and 1-for-3 showings at the plate, respectively.

GAME RECAP

Augustana retired Oklahoma Baptist 1-2-3 at the top of the inaugural frame before charting two runs when the field switched.

With one out on the board, a double from AU's Torri Chute sent Desi Cuevas and Andrea Cain across home plate. However, Jones and company stopped the bleeding with a strikeout and a forced fly-out.

OBU's bats remained silent until Adler's single in the fourth frame. The feat was to no avail, as AU sent the Bison to the dugout moments later on a 6-4-3 double play.

Then, at the bottom of the fifth inning, Augustana tacked on its final two scores.

There wasn't much else for OBU besides Reese's hit at the top of the Fifth. For the game, OBU left two on base.
