OBU Downs Harding in Penalty Kicks, Advances to GAC Final

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- In a tightly contested match, Oklahoma Baptist and Harding drew 1-1 after regulation and double overtime, with the Bison eventually edging out a 3-2 advantage in the penalty-kick shootout at Kluck Field.

The Bison will next face off with host Ouachita in the GAC Tournament Final on Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. OBU has made every tourney final (8) since joining the league full-time in 2017.  

Harding struck first in the 12th minute when Carmen Gunn tapped in a right-footed goal following a blocked shot from Georgia Templeton, who had delivered the assist after Lauren Service's corner. The Bison struggled to generate offense in the first half, managing five shots to Harding's eight, with Harding goalkeeper Maysa Willis making a few saves.

It wasn't until the 81st minute that Oklahoma Baptist found its equalizer. Lex Williamson, the standout midfielder, delivered a stunning left-footed strike set up by Ashley Bell's corner from the right side. Williamson's goal breathed life into the Bison, who dominated the second half with eight shots and four corner kicks, applying consistent pressure to Harding's backline.

Both teams had opportunities to clinch the game in overtime. Bison freshman keeper Claire Stoermer was stellar in goal, registering eight saves, including critical stops in extra time. Harding's Gunn and Bailey Bulliner kept the Bison defense on their toes, but the game ultimately went to penalty kicks.

The shootout showcased dramatic highs and lows, with Stoermer saving two shots from Harding's Caroline Kauppi and Regan Thompson. HU did itself no favors as well, hitting the crossbar on two attempts.

As for the green and gold, freshman Chloe Monroe delivered the team's first penalty conversion before Olivia Kenas and Hali White finished off the next two. It was White's that was the go-ahead making the tally 3-2.  In Harding's last chance, Service hit the crossbar sending the Bison into jubilation.

Sunday's match will mark the second straight season that Ouachita and Oklahoma Baptist will have faced off in the championship. The Tigers claimed victory in last year's bout, 2-0 in Shawnee.
