SHAWNEE – Sophomore
Lex Williamson scored with about 3.5 seconds left during Oklahoma Baptist's 2-1 win over Ouachita on Wednesday afternoon at the OBU Soccer Complex.
It was a crucial win for the Bison who moved their record to 4-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in Great American Conference play. That league mark has the Bison in sole possession of fourth place with four GAC contests left.
Oklahoma Baptist struck first in the 9th minute when
Emma Teague deflected a pass from
Ashley Bell into the right corner of the net. That goal was a part of a first-half onslaught that saw the hosts gain a 12-5 shots advantage. Possession also heavily favored the hosts who seemingly operated in Ouachita's half for most of the 45 minutes.
To its credit, Ouachita's goalie, Carina Chavarria, made several saves to keep the deficit at one.
The second half saw the Tigers push forward aggressively, earning more corner kicks and creating chances. In the 69th minute, Jorden Nelson equalized with a close-range finish off her right shoulder on a pass by Teagan Jaussi. The momentum seemed to be shifting as Ouachita continued to press, but they couldn't find a breakthrough.
As the match neared its end, Oklahoma Baptist capitalized on a late opportunity. Following a long pass by
Hali White to the left side of the 18,
Sam Sheffield picked up the ball, tapped it to Williamson and watched as the sophomore fired with her left foot into the lower-right corner. That left the Bison bench in jubilation and sealed the 2-1 victory.
This coming Saturday, Oct. 26, the Bison will head to Harding for an 11 a.m. match in Searcy, Arkansas. A couple weeks ago, HU defeated Oklahoma Baptist 4-1.
