OBU Completes Undefeated Weekend in Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma Baptist (5-0, 0-0 GAC) picked up two more wins to cement an undefeated stay at the Mardi Gras Invitational, beating Union University (0-3, 0-0 GSC) and Mississippi College (2-1, 0-0 GSC) on Saturday.

The Bison earned its third straight win without surrendering a score, dominating the Bulldogs 7-0 before defeating Mississippi College 2-1 in today's finale.

OBU's five consecutive victories to open its 2023 campaign is the best start in the Division II era.

The pitching staff was efficient, as it had been all weekend. Aspen Younce, Jaycee Shaffer, and Kayleigh Jones took the circle and did their due diligence. The trio combined for 14 strikeouts, led by Jones' seven against MC.

Jones picked up her 37th career win, bringing her season record to 3-0. Younce fanned five in 5.0 innings of work to chart her first win of 2023 against Union, while Shaffer, a freshman, relieved Younce and struck out two without surrendering a run or hit.

Game 1

For the first time since Thursday, Oklahoma Baptist crossed home plate in the opening inning. A Union fielding error allowed Emily Adler to reach first and score Sammie Greene to tally the game's inaugural run.

After Younce and the defense retired the bottom of the frame, Mia Moddelmog put the Bison on the board again, courtesy of a sacrifice fly that scored Adi Reese.

Two scoreless innings passed before OBU tacked on two more runs, thanks to E. Adler and Samantha Campos, which pushed the tally to 4-0.

In the sixth, Greene tripled to plate Sydney Adler before her twin sister, Emily, singled to bring around Greene.

The final score came at the top of the seventh when Shelby Warden scored off a Gwyn Miller single.

E. Adler registered a season-high three hits in four at-bats, resulting in two RBIs. S. Adler went two 2-2 at the plate and scored twice to complete her sheet.

Game 2

OBU fell into a 1-0 hole against Mississippi College, its first time trailing all weekend, following a single into center field in the opening frame.

Luckily, that was the last of MC's scoring as Oklahoma Baptist erased the deficit with two runs in the fourth.

Reagan Ford reached on an error to put the first Bison on base before a Greene bunt advanced her to second. Then an E. Adler single sent Ford across home plate to knot the contest one-all.

Campos put the green and gold on top with a double into right that scored E. Adler. OBU would not look back as they pulled out the victory and raised their record to 5-0.

Next is a trip to Texas for the Midwestern State University Round-Up. The Bison are set to take on Fort Hays State, Cameron, Rockhurst, and MWSU over the weekend.
