Huge Start Boosts Savage Storm Over Bison

SHAWNEE – An outpour of runs late lifted Southeastern 9-3 over Oklahoma Baptist (19-17, 7-10 GAC) in game one of the three-game series on Friday afternoon.

The Savage Storm (19-18, 10-8 GAC) came out on fire, ripping off four runs and five hits in the inaugural inning. Finally, pitcher Kayleigh Jones put a halt to Southeastern's efforts with a third-out strikeout to retire the offensive attack.

Adi Reese got the Bison back on track at the bottom half of the frame, smacking a ball over left field to cut into the deficit. Unfortunately, Southeastern regained control and shut out the remaining batters.

The OBU defense knocked out three straight before the offense tacked on another run in the second. After Samantha Campos reached base on balls, she stole second and advanced to third following the next batter.

Campos made her way across home plate after a Sheyanne Sandoval singled into center field.

The game's scoring silenced over the next two innings as Jones and company found their groove, allowing zero hits and runs.

However, SEOSU tallied five more runs to extend their lead to 9-2 before a Reese double scored Sammie Greene for OBU's final score of the day.

Jones struck out seven and surrendered four earned runs through 5.0 innings of work before Aspen Younce came in as relief in the sixth. Younce shut out the Savage Storm in the remaining frames, collecting two strikeouts on the way.

Reese led the Bison offensively, posting two hits, a homerun, and two RBIs. Sandoval also registered a hit and an RBI.

Oklahoma Baptist will look to turn the page as they'll finish out the series in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at noon in Shawnee.
