Bison Bounce Back in Finale, Split Day With FHSU

FORT HAYS, Kan. – Oklahoma Baptist (17-10) rebounded from a 16-9 loss in the day's first game to blank Fort Hays State (11-15) 2-0 in the midweek finale on Wednesday afternoon.

Much like yesterday, today's win came courtesy of outstanding performances from pitcher Kayleigh Jones and Samantha Campos.

Campos was responsible for bringing home two Bison while Jones tossed 11 strikeouts and surrendered zero runs in 7.0 innings of action.

GAME ONE

The bulk of the scoring, from both teams, occurred in the first game. The clubs combined for 26 hits, including 16 from the opposition.

Fort Hays State started their scoring spree in the second frame, crossing two Tigers for a 2-0 lead. The home team tacked on three more in the following inning for a 5-0 advantage, while OBU left a runner on base in each frame leading up to the point.

Finally, the Bison offensive attack came alive as they erupted for six runs in the fourth. With bases loaded, Gwyn Miller walked to score Emily Richardson for OBU's first score.

After the next at-bat, Aileen Alvelar and Campos scored off a Tiger miscue before two more Bison crossed courtesy of another FHSU error. A Jocee Sparks single concluded OBU's run in the inning, as the action plated Sheyanne Sandoval.

Fort Hays matched the Bison's six runs at the bottom of the fourth to take back the lead, 11-6. Oklahoma Baptist would post three more scores in the next two frames, but the Tigers' good fortune continued as they completed their victory with five runs in the sixth.

Sandoval tallied two RBIs and scored a run while Campos was 3-4 at the plate. Campos scored twice while Sammie Greene matched the total. Six other registered a hit, including Greene, to complete OBU's 10-hit afternoon.

Aspen Younce (L, 5-4) got the start in the circle, as she surrendered six earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Shianne Eddings and Aileen Avelar also saw action, allowing three and five runs on the day.

GAME TWO

Oklahoma Baptist struck first in the finale as Samantha Campos singled into right field to plate teammate Adi Reese in the beginning frame.

Then, in the third, Campos' bat rang true again as another single sent Emily Richardson across home plate for a 2-0 Bison lead.

Afterwards, Kayleigh Jones and the OBU defense took care of business. With three strikeouts under her belt going into the fourth, the junior went on to add eight more. During the span, Oklahoma Baptist surrendered two hits and allowed two on base.

Campos finished 3-4 for a second consecutive game, including two RBIs. Sheyanne Sandoval and Reese scored runs while five others charted a hit.

Jones earns her 12th win of the season and fifth straight.

Oklahoma Baptist will return home for a conference weekend series with Harding on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Bison Softball Park.
