Big Bats Lead Softball to Opening Series Win Over Northwestern

SHAWNEE – The Oklahoma Baptist softball team used a pair of longs balls and pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon to defeat Northwestern Oklahoma State in the first game of their GAC series, 8-2, on Friday afternoon.

The Bison jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a RBI single from Jocee Sparks and a RBI from Emily Richardson on a fielder's choice.

OBU blew the game open in the second inning with a six spot on the board. Sheyanne Sandoval led the inning off with a single followed by a two-run bomb to center from Shelby Savage to make it a 4-0 game.

After McKenna Anderson and Kylie Kawamura reached on singles, Cheyenne Demaree laced a double to left center to drive in two more runs and increase the lead to 6-0.

Sparks would cap the inning off with a towering two-run shot over the left field wall to make it an 8-0 contest and put the Bison in complete control.

Kayleigh Jones got the start in the circle and retired the first nine batters, striking out six in the process. Though Northwestern started to piece together some offense, Jones worked five innings and struck out nine to earn her 12th win of the year.

Aspen Younce would come in relief and shut down any threat from the Rangers in the final two innings as the Bison took home the 8-2 victory.

Sparks was 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI while Demaree was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Sandoval was 2-for-3 with two runs while Anderson was 2-for-2 with a double. Savage added a 1-for-3 day with a home run and two RBI.

OBU will return to action tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the series as they take on the Rangers in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Catch all the action on the Bison Spots Network.
