Tennis Opens the Season in Nebraska

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The Oklahoma Baptist men's and women's tennis teams opened the season in Nebraska on Friday as both teams played a pair of matches involving Colorado Mesa and Nebraska-Kearney.

The Bison men kicked things off on Friday morning and dropped their first match to the Mavericks by the score of 6-1.

OBU dropped the doubles point to fall behind early on before Aaron Brewer picked up a big win at No. 1 singles to keep OBU alive, defeating Christian Alberchtsen by the score of 6-3, 6-3.

Christian Siegle and Carson Thoma each played a pair of three set matches, but ultimately fell just short as CMU took the 6-1 win.

The two teams returned later in the afternoon for a second meeting. Again, OBU could not muster a point in the double sets, but got off to a hot start in singles as Kaey-Den Tan earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, while Brewer picked up his second win of the day, defeating Steven Howe at No. 2 singles by the score of 6-3, 6-3.

However, the Mavericks took back control of the match and pulled away for the 5-2 victory.

On the women's side, OBU opened up the season against host Nebraska-Kearney, falling to the Lopers 6-1.

The lone point for OBU came from Gabrielly Lamas, picking up a thrilling three set win over Claire Neil at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Jenna Noel put together a three set match of her own at No. 2 singles, but fell in the third set 6-3.

The Bison would fall later that evening to Colorado Mesa by the score of 5-2. Singles carried OBU on the night as Lamas picked up her second victory at singles, defeating Halle Romero by the score of 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

Meanwhile, Noel bounced back beautiful at No. 2 singles, rolling to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Maike Waldburger.

The Bison will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 13, as they head to San Angelo, Texas, for a pair of matchups against Dallas Baptist and Angelo State.
