SEARCY, Ark. – No. 3-seeded Oklahoma Baptist surrendered a two-goal advantage and saw their upset bid fall short, falling to No. 2 Ouachita Baptist, 4-3, in double overtime on Thursday night at the Great American Conference Tournament. It's the first time since OBU joined the GAC that the Bison have failed to feature in the GAC Tournament Championship.
Â
Thiago Dos Santos got the Bison on the board early after
Austin Needham slotted him a pass on the left side of the box in only the third minute of play. The First Team All-GAC selection did well to redirect the ball back across the frame of goal, finishing to the bottom left corner.
Â
Despite giving up the tying goal in the 12th minute, OBU regained the lead three minutes later. Dos Santos picked up the ball in his own defensive third, shrugged off some pressure and raced down the sideline. With the defense collapsing on him, he slid the ball to a trailing
Luis Romero who saw his shot deflect off a Ouachita defender and settle in the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Â
Martin Romero added a third goal in the 41st minute when he spied Pacheco well off his line. His shot from 23 yards out just got over the tips of Pacheco's outstretched hands to make it 3-1. However, with just 13 seconds left, the Tigers would pull one back to make it 3-2.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist gave up a third goal in the 61st minute to make the match tied at 3-3. With neither team finding a decisive fourth goal, the semifinal went to extra time.
Â
Neither team could find the golden goal in the first 10 minutes of extra time, but the Bison unfortunately gave up a goal in the 107th minute to find themselves on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision.
Â
The loss ends Oklahoma Baptist's season with a 7-9-1 overall record, tied for the second-most wins under OBU head coach
Anthony Yousey.
