SHAWNEE – Despite claiming an early lead thanks to
Sam Smith, the Bison fell, 3-1, to No. 25 Fort Hays State in non-conference action on Thursday night at the OBU Soccer Complex.
Â
Smith's goal came in the sixth minute of play after Oklahoma Baptist earned a corner kick.
Jesus Andrade whipped in an in-swinger that perfectly fell to the head of Smith. The senior defender's bullet header beat FHSU goalkeeper Alex Rodela to the near post for a 1-0 OBU lead.
Â
Unfortunately for OBU, the Tigers would go on to score three unanswered goals despite the best efforts of
Vicente Castillo and
Thiago Dos Santos, who each attempted four shots in the loss.
Bronson Wise, making his first start since Sept. 17 against Southwest Baptist, recorded five saves.
Â
The game started an hour and ten minutes behind schedule due to a miscommunication that resulted in the referees arriving late to the field.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist (9-6-1) returns to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they make the trip to Bethany, Oklahoma, to conclude Great American Conference play against rival Southern Nazarene. With a  win or tie on Tuesday night, the Bison will clinch their first regular season title since 2010, as well as home field advantage for the GAC Tournament.
