Papac Takes Helm of OBU Tennis

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist has hired former University of Oklahoma and University of Georgia volunteer assistant Nick Papac as its head men's and women's tennis coach.

Papac captained the 2014-15 Sooner team, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation and won the 2015 ITA Indoor national title. As a player, Papac played on four Big 12 championship and two NCAA finalist squads.

"We're thrilled to have Coach Papac on Bison Hill," said OBU athletics director Robert Davenport. "As both a player and coach, he has been an integral part of some of the most successful college tennis programs in the country. We're excited for the impact his experience will have in building on the tremendous success our teams have enjoyed as we continue our transition to NCAA Division II."

Papac succeeds Peter McCorkle, whose teams won the NCCAA National Championships this season with Great American Conference titles for the men in 2017 and the women in 2016. McCorkle accepted an assistant coaching job at Oral Roberts.

"My goal is going to be to maximize the potential of the team every year," Papac said. "I want to win conference championships and just make the most of the potential of every team."

Papac, who has served as a coach at OU since August and spent a year in a similar position at Georgia, said he has been dealt a strong hand.

"Peter did a great job building this team and I really want to just continue to build on that foundation," Papac said.

The new Bison coach noted in a brief meeting with the team a strong sense of community.

"Playing college tennis at the highest level, one of the things I've noticed is that the teams with a strong sense of family are the most successful," Papac said. "This is a close-knit team and they let me know when we met that they think of each other as family. That will serve them well when tough situations arise."
