SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist women's golf helped raise money for the Salvation Army by volunteering to ring the iconic bell in Shawnee last week.

The Lady Bison manned one of the red Salvation Army kettles in four-hour shifts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Donations will help to fund programs in the Shawnee area, including a nightly soup kitchen, a 30-bed shelter, utility assistance, food pantry and clothing vouchers to the Family Store and support the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

"Being able to volunteer for the Salvation Army with my teammates was a great experience. Knowing that we were doing something together to benefit our community meant so much to us," said senior
Paige Neidy.

Collecting donations through red kettles in communities is a tradition that stretches back to 1891. Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee set up the first kettle in San Francisco with the goal to provide assistance to needy people around Christmas. The practice spread throughout the United States and across the world, enabling the Salvation Army to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten.
